About Johnny Newman

Basketball legend, philanthropist, mentor and businessman, Johnny Newman is a powerhouse presence both locally and nationally. The former NBA star has taken the same work ethic that sustained him through a phenomenal 16 year pro career and turned it into success helping others. Education is everything to the Danville, VA native who is a graduate of George Washington High School. Johnny took things much further than just basketball and has the distinction of being one of a few NBA players who not only has a Bachelors’ degree from the University of Richmond but also a Masters Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. A steadfast leader, Mr. Newman has a long track record of giving back to support the community and its efforts to develop young people to their fullest potential. He was an exceptional student-athlete who led by example. His basketball career helped him lead the University of Richmond to several CAA championships. He is the university’s all-time leading scorer with 2,383 points with the record still standing to date. Richmond justly rewarded Newman by retiring his jersey in 1991. Newman was the 29th player selected in the 1986 NBA draft and became known as an exceptional marksman in the pros. His consummate professional demeanor and tremendous play helped him make the roster of teams like the New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks. During his career, he scored 12,740 points from 1986-2002 as a guard/forward.
